So naturally, the Bucs took all that extra time out on their next opponent.
Brazoswood scored on all of its offensive possessions, aside from drives at the end of the half and game, in whooping Northbrook 59-7 in a non-district contest Saturday night at Darrell Tully Stadium in Houston.
“I talked about how it was about us. We didn’t talk about who our opponent was — we watched film as coaches and had a game plan ready to go and show them what they were going to see — but it was about us and working on getting better at what we do,” Brazoswood coach Joe Dale Cary said. “It was all about the Bucs. Every day, we broke out (in the huddle) on ‘us.’ It was us on three, and it will be the same next week.
“It’s really like that every week; it doesn’t matter who we are playing. We just have to get back to work on basic fundamentals.”
The Bucs (2-1) were far from sharp in their loss last Thursday to the Rangers, and Cary’s message after the contest was how his team wanted to respond.
They responded Saturday night, especially running back Jose Trevino, who reached the end zone five times. Trevino scored on runs of 1 and 45 yards and touchdown receptions of 4, 74 and 57 yards. Unofficially, Trevino finished with 86 yards on seven carries. As a receiver, he grabbed three passes for 135 yards.
“I’m really glad that No. 30 is on our team. He is a good football player and a great kid,” Cary said. “He works hard and deserves everything that comes his way, but happy for him, and I’m glad he’s a Buccaneer.”
Trevino got the offense going on the second play from scrimmage with a 24-yard run to get into Northbrook (0-3) territory. Five plays later, the junior back found the end zone 2:03 into the game.
A couple of downfield passes by quarterback Kelan Pullen on B’wood’s next drive set up the junior signal-caller with a lob pass to a wide-open Trevino for the 4-yard score.
Mallon James’ 20-yard punt return set up B’wood on Northbrook’s 45-yard line, and Trevino took it to the house two plays in for a 21-0 lead with 4:05 remaining in the opening quarter.
James, a Brazosport transfer, had a good night on special teams and on defense, including an interception that would have been a pick-six, but a block in the back nullified the return. He was also in on several tackles and plays in coverage.
“Mallon is a great athlete, got a knack for the ball, and we want to get him involved on special teams as much as possible — kickoff return, punt return — anytime we can get the ball in his hands and let him use his skills, usually good things happen for the Bucs,” Cary said.
Pullen hit Trevino for a 74-yard catch-and-run score with 2:10 to go in the first.
The Bucs opened the second quarter marching down the field on two Pullen completions to Shaydon Coulter, an 11-yard run by back Julian Diaz and a Pullen run to get the Bucs to the 2-yard line. Diaz punched it in to extend the visiting team’s lead to 35-0 with 9:48 left in the half.
Brazoswood added two scores before halftime.
Pullen connected on passes of 10, 17 and 12 to receivers Gayland Strauther, Israel Williams and Coulter. Trevino ran for 8 yards to the 15-yard line, and Pullen busted through the remaining yardage to go up 42-0.
Brazoswood’s final scoring drive was a Pullen pass to Trevino, who stiff-armed a defender in the middle of the field and reached the end zone untouched the rest of the way as part of his 57-yard touchdown reception for a 49-0 advantage with 2:18 on the clock.
Brady Faulkner connected on a 38-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Jarrell Montiel scored on a 5-yard run with 6:14 left in regulation to make it a 59-7 game. Northbrook’s lone score was an 82-yard run in the third quarter.
